Instant Coffee Mocha Brownies With Coffee Frosting Recipe
Ingredients:
Brownies:
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups white sugar
- 4 teaspoons Death Wish Dark Roast Instant Coffee granules, or more to taste
- 1 tablespoon hot water
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Frosting:
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 tablespoon Death Wish Dark Roast Instant Coffee granules
- 1 1/2 tablespoons milk
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
2. Make the brownies: Melt shortening and butter in a small pan over low heat. Pour melted mixture into a mixing bowl.
3. Stir cocoa into butter mixture until well combined, followed by the sugar.
4. Dissolve Death Wish Dark Roast Instant Coffee granules with hot water in a small bowl. Stir into cocoa mixture.
5. Then whisk eggs into the batter, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir flour and salt into batter just until moist. Pour batter into the prepared baking pan.
6. Bake in preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with crumbs, 25-30 minutes. Cool completely.
7. Make frosting: Beat softened butter with vanilla extract in a bowl. Add confectioners’ sugar and beat until creamy using an electric mixer on medium speed.
8. Dissolve Death Wish Dark Roast Instant Coffee with milk in a small bowl; add to frosting. Increase mixer speed to high and beat until light and fluffy, 3-5 minutes.
9. Frost the cooled brownies and enjoy as you devour them!

Pro Tips:
- For this recipe, unsweetened cocoa powder will do, but Dutch-processed cocoa powder (Dutch chocolate) is better to use instead. It dissolves easily and is darker in color.
- Don’t overbeat the batter once the flour is added. Just beat until all the flour is incorporated and no flour pockets remain.
- Line your brownie pan with parchment paper to lift the brownies from the pan more easily. The parchment paper will make clean-up a breeze, too.
- Don’t overbake the brownies!
- Let the brownies cool in the pan to room temperature. Then transfer the pan to the refrigerator for one more hour or overnight to make cutting them into perfect squares easier.
