What Is Vietnamese Egg Coffee?
Really, it’s quite simple. Along with the strong dark roast instant coffee, instead of using regular milk to achieve the creamy consistency in the coffee, a raw egg yolk is used instead. But the flavor is not super yolky. The egg yolk, combined with the condensed milk, creates a sweet, light and frothy, airy foam. When whipped, it’s the texture, not flavor, that comes through. When you taste those contrasting flavors and textures, you’ll know why this Vietnamese Egg Instant Coffee is a favorite around the world.
Where Does Vietnamese Egg Coffee Come From?
Vietnamese Egg Coffee was born out of a scarcity of fresh milk in Vietnam before and during the French War. Although it’s served in cafes all over Vietnam to this day, egg coffee specifically got its start in Hanoi. A bold barista improvised and decided to mix whipped eggs into the coffee and not milk. And the rest, as we’d say it, is history.
What Makes Egg Coffee Unique?
This Vietnamese Egg Instant Coffee recipe is connected directly to the country’s culture and really is one of the most original that Vietnam has to offer. But thankfully, you don’t have to travel all the way to Vietnam to enjoy this special treat. You can find all of these ingredients that you need to make this tasty drink close to home—guaranteed.
The Coffee:
Vietnamese coffee tends to be strong and bold—as strong and bold as the robusta that’s typically used there. Robusta is also rich in taste and pairs well with both the flavor and texture of an egg yolk. That’s why Death Wish Dark Roast Instant Coffee is a perfect substitute when you can’t just . . . let’s say, head to Vietnam to pick up some coffee beans. Our dark roast instant coffee is made from quality Fair Trade and organic coffee beans and is “freeze-dried” vs. “spray-dried,” which is unlike other instant coffees that are commonly “spray-dried.”
The Egg:
If you’re a baker, you already know that egg yolk is often used for sweet foods and drinks. The egg adds a rich flavor and texture. In addition to adding sweetness, eggs and egg yolks contain protein and healthy fats, too.
The Milk:
Condensed milk is key for the Vietnamese Egg Instant Coffee recipe. For centuries, the Vietnamese have incorporated condensed milk into their diets. Condensed milk is an everyday commodity, much like regular milk is to us and many other cultures. The condensed milk actually is why some people compare this drink to a Cadbury Creme Egg-style coffee drink.
